my memories of movies and fashion

since learning to sew, i've been trying to pinpoint what inspires me.
color: yes.
anthropologie: yes.

i keep coming back to movies.

there are movie costumes that have stayed with me since i was a very little girl.
notice that most of these center around the year 1954.
???

WHITE CHRISTMAS:
i wait every year to sing with bing crosby:  "SNOOWWWW".
but my favorite part of the movie is rosemary clooney's laser cut black velvet decolletage.

GONE WITH THE WIND:
another annual feature in my house growing up.
the ruffles, the ribbons laced through her sleeves at the barbecue, the green green green.

and of course, we can't discuss gone with the wind fashion without talking about this one:
"i just saw it in the window and.....had to have it."

it's common knowledge that some like it hot is my all-time favorite movie.
i always assumed they must have sewn marilyn into her costumes.
maybe they did.
so body hugging and faux 20s.

one of my fave hitchcock flicks.
oh that coat, that coat, that coat.
so iconic, i immediately thought of it when i watched a more recent movie.

i have a vivid memory of the first time i was allowed to pick out a movie from the library.
dial m for murder is what i chose:

grace kelly is forefront in my memories of fashion.
now that i'm older, i realize the red is more symbolic of the "deeds" of this character.
i love the shape of the bodice and the sleeves.

grace again.  this blouse is fantastic.
it's so fantastic, in fact, that i spend the majority of this scene trying to figure out how it's designed.

this dress from the same movie.
while lisa teases jeffrey, she tells him it cost her $1800.
uh.  yes.
beautiful.

bette davis.
brooch.
off the shoulder.

i love lucy is as much a staple in my life as my own family.
the thing i love about i love lucy is that she sometimes repeated her outfits.
like any housewife would.
this outfit popped up a lot and it always stayed with me.
keep in mind, lucy just got home from lunch at the brown derby where she was NOT wearing this.
so it must be some sort of house-coat.  beautiful.
